Case Western Reserve University Taps Calix for Gig.U Project

Calix?(News – Alert), a provider of telecom multiservice access solutions, announced the deployment of its Calix E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) at the Case Western Reserve University to support Gig.U University Community Next Generation Innovation Project.

Case Western Reserve is one of the 37 universities involved in the Gig.U initiative. The university will deploy fiber in and around its Cleveland, Ohio, campus. It will use Calix E7-2 and 716GE-I indoor optical network terminals (ONTs) to enable a network capable of delivering up to one gigabit per second (Gbps) to subscribers.

Through this gigabit network project, the university is looking to learn more about what advanced applications will emerge as students, residents, businesses, and anchor institutions experience the full benefits of the broadband speeds now available to them.

For this deployment, Calix partnered with Gigabit Squared. The participating companies will analyze the knowledge and lessons learned about this deployment. ?Gigabit Squared announced the Gigabit Neighborhood Gateway?(News – Alert) Program on May 23rd in support of the Gig.U initiative.

The first area targeted for deployment of this gigabit network will be the retirement community of Judson at University Circle, an accredited, not-for-profit organization that provides housing and care programs for residents.

“As research organizations, universities are in the unique position to create the ideas and make the discoveries that will drive the future development of our communities and our country as a whole — making them an ideal place to deploy and experiment with gigabit fiber networks,” said Case Western Reserve CIO Lev Gonick, in a statement.

The fiber access network will also deploy Compass?(News – Alert) Flow Analyzer by Calix to closely monitor and analyze the traffic patterns and applications riding across this network.

University of Arizona to Research Electro-optical Effect on Lightwave’s Perkinamine Indigo

Lightwave Logic, Inc. recently announced the University of Arizona will continue with its research on the electro-optical effect on its Perkinamine Indigo, which was found to be higher than 250 picometers per volt at 1550-nanometers when leveraging the conventional Teng-Man testing protocol.

Initial recordings were taken during demonstrations conducted at the University of Colorado and Photon-X.

“We’ll continue to test Perkinamine Indigo using the standard Teng-Man method at Photon-X and CU Boulder with promising results,” said Jim Marcelli, CEO at Lightwave Logics. “Our internal development effort on the balance of our Perkinamine family of chromophores is moving forward as planned. We continue to work with our major microelectronics company and large system supplier through the continued testing.”

The company is currently working on the development of advanced Non Linear Optical Polymer Materials Platform for high speed fiber-optic data communications and optical computing applications. The research at the University of Arizona will continue to prove the validity of the results demonstrated at the University of Colorado and Photon-X.  

“While Dr. Norwood’s group attempted to utilize the existing material samples in order to have a direct comparison with earlier measurements, these were not compatible with the technical specifications of the new Arizona testing procedure,” said Dr. Louis Glasgow, Lightwave’s Chief Technology Officer. “We have agreed to reconfigure the material and provide them new samples that will satisfy their new testing protocol. We anticipate that this may take us at least one month to complete. We are continuing our effort to deepen our understanding of Perkinamine Indigo’s unusual properties to further our general effort to commercialize devices built around our entire family of advanced organic nonlinear optical polymers. casino spiele .”

During initial measurements, the University Of Arizona College of Optical Sciences recorded interesting effects, and is keen on pursuing further research to gain a better understanding of the origin of Perkinamine Indigo’s response.

The University specifically wants to research the electro-optic coefficient r13 and the piezoelectric coefficient d33, which will allow it to determine the effects of electro-optic coefficient r33. In order to do this, new material samples will need to realign to make it more receptive to the University’s technical needs, as per their Mach-Zehnder interferometry test method.

OIF to Unveil New Ethernet and OTN Technology at its 2012 Global Event

Currently, 12 companies that are members of the OIF (News – Alert) are conducting global interoperability tests of Ethernet services over OTN transport. All of this testing is leading up to a demonstration at the OIF 2012 Enabling High-Speed Dynamic Services event, which is taking place from March 6-8, 2012. Vendors participating in the interoperability test include AT&T, China Telecom (News – Alert) and NTT.

As carriers globally are migrating their networks away from SONET/SDH to Ethernet and OTN, the combination of the latter will enable operators to prepare their networks for rapid growth and volume while accommodating the continued use of the classic TDM technology. Sources say the OIF is one of the most important influencers in converging the two complimentary technologies and as a group, it continues to display the ability to come together and collaborate on new technology that will only improve the wireless and communications industry as a whole.

By testing the technology with multiple carriers within the OIF, it will allow these vendors to evaluate the tools and determine how to best integrate the new equipment into existing networks. The combination of Ethernet services and OTN transport is compelling and there is momentum in the industry to converge these technologies,” said Jim Jones of Alcatel-Lucent (News – Alert) and the OIF’s president and Networking Interoperability Working Group chair in a statement. Overall, the goal is to use Ethernet as the predominant access and client interconnect technology and OTN as the dominant transport technology.

New research also suggests the technology to combine the two is being developed at just the right time, as OTN is forecasted to show a strong growth in capabilities and revenue generation. 

According to Infonetics (News – Alert), sales of OTN switching equipment currently comprise only about eight percent of the OTN market, with more mature OTN transport equipment representing the remaining 92 percent. But that’s expected to change substantially over the next few years, as service providers get serious about deploying OTN switching.

OTN and Ethernet are a natural combination that will allow network technology to run more efficiently. And with the OIF testing it across multiple carriers, it will allow its service providers to analyze the technology and figure out how to integrate it into their own systems effectively, which will hopefully make it cheaper to apply these new technologies easily into everyday operations once the product is finished with its testing stage.

FIBERTOWN Boosts Redundancy, Connectivity in Houston Data Center

FIBERTOWN, a Houston-based company providing high-availability colocation centers and business continuity office space, has added new telecom providers into its North Houston data center.

The 50,000 sq. ft. center already connects a wide variety of customers into several major Internet backbones.

The data center, which straddles a major fiber line between Dallas and Houston, is built for redundancy, including multiple fiber entry points into the building. It also features a modular, pod-centered design, fault tolerant 2N power and cooling, and security operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.

The company said that every customer is protected and the network will never go down. It’s also located outside of a flood plain, which is important given that the data center is located inside a hurricane-prone area.

FIBERTOWN offers telecoms operating in the Gulf Coast “a carrier neutral, one-stop solution for best-in-class technology and amenities to support business continuity needs.”

The facility offers Point of Presence (PoP), which is where the customers of the various telecom companies actually connect to the Internet.

FIBERTOWN’s clients include AboveNet, Black Stone, Level 3, Phonoscope, Sprint, Suddenlink, Century Link (Qwest), TW Telecom, Verizon and Windstream (News – Alert) (formerly PAETEC)

“Each customer’s bandwidth needs are specific, and FIBERTOWN customers demand the highest levels of availability and performance,” Perryman said.
