Zayo Extends Fiber Network in Denver Metro Area

Zayo Group?(News – Alert) has further extended its network presence in the greater Denver area. Zayo already offers fiber capacity and ensures that its network can be advantageously used by customers across the region. The latest investment will offer an enhanced fiber build, which will cover the Front Range and include the cities of Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, Longmont, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and the larger Denver metro area, especially for a big customer project being carried out in the area.

Currently, fiber optic networks in Denver and Colorado Springs are operated by Zayo. Zayo’s presence in the Central Business Districts of both the cities along with Denver Technology Center will receive an added boost with this extension of fiber network. Customers of Zayo at Arvada, which is to the north of Fort Collins, and Ken Caryl, which is in the southwest corner of the Denver Metro, will be able to avail the fiber network as a result of this extension. XO Communications Selects Transmode’s TM-Series

Cortina Systems’ OTN Processors Interoperable with 100G Fiber Optic Modules from Acacia

Cortina Systems (News – Alert), a provider of high-performance semiconductor technologies for the communications industry, announced it has successfully completed interoperability of its Optical Transport Network (OTN) processors with 100G fiber optic modules from Acacia Communications.

Acacia Communications provides intelligent subsystems for ultra high speed fiber optic networks. Acacia 100G Coherent Optical Modules now integrate with Cortina CS605x 100G and 40G ASSP OTN processors to deliver a robust subsystem that addresses the 100G needs faced by network equipment manufacturers.

Cortina Systems recently launched CS605x, a breakthrough family of highly integrated transport processors supporting the converged 100G market. Operators depend on higher-speed 100G optical transport equipment to lower the cost per bit for new wavelengths. The technology also gives superior dispersion performance of coherent optics and lowers incremental common equipment costs. The interoperable 100G coherent optical network components like that offered by Cortina and Acacia will be a perfect fit for the industry.

“Carriers require cost-effective solutions that support an unprecedented level of integration while meeting standards, enabling the deployment of high quality, data intensive services, and reducing operational costs,” said John LoMedico, vice president of Sales and Business Development, Acacia.

“Interoperability between our 100G Coherent Optical Module and the Cortina 100G ASSP OTN processor ensures a comprehensive 100G solution that will help drive high-performance, more cost-effective designs,” LoMedico added.

Southern Cross Cable Networks Deploys CALIENT FiberConnect 320X Photonic Switch

CALIENT has announced that its FiberConnect 320X photonic switch will help trans-Pacific bandwidth wholesaler Southern Cross Cable Networks remotely reconfigure its fiber network within seconds. This will result in significant time and cost savings for Southern Cross.

CALIENT explained that it developed the FiberConnect 320X photonic switch utilizing its core 3D Optical MEMS technology, silicon micro mirrors, to switch fiber-optic photons. It is built with high reliability and redundancy for mission-critical carrier applications. The FiberConnect 320X is one of the solutions from the company that bring the benefits of photonic switching to new markets by providing dramatically smaller subsystem solutions enabling the company to engage new partnerships with other networking companies.

The Southern Cross Cable Network is a fully protected fiber-optic cable network that consists of 28,900 km of submarine and 1,600 km of terrestrial fiber optic cables and connects Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii directly to the U.S. west coast. With the FiberConnect 320X photonic switches, it will now be able to remotely configure optical connections in a timely manner.

Southern Cross asserted that even though 90 percent of its network is configured for automatic protection on self-healing rings, there is always a small chance of multiple failures that require redirection of traffic to maintain service. Until now this has been a manual intervention that would take time to implement.

After reviewing the vendors in the photonic switching space, Southern Cross came to the conclusion that CALIENT offered the best port density, price, and overall reputation and as a result it has now acquired and deployed their switches at all sites in its network.

Electric Corporation (tokyo:6503) announced today that it has signed
a contract to upgrade a transpacific submarine cable manufacturersnetwork by
incorporating 40 Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and
increasing transmission design capacity up to fivefold to 5.2 Tbps. The
upgrade to the Asia America Gateway (AAG) cable manufacturersNetwork, which will
involve installing submarine line terminal equipment (SLTE) in eight
countries, is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2012.

The AAG cable manufacturersNetwork, a 10 Gbps DWDM system set up in 2009, is owned by
a consortium of nineteen major telecommunications carriers and comprises
over 20,000 kilometers of fiber-optic cable manufacturerslinking 10 landing stations
located in seven Southeast Asian countries and the United States.

To satisfy the rapid increase in demand for internet traffic, there has
been urgent need to raise transmission capacity and speed. A field trial
conducted on the AAG cable manufacturersNetwork has proved that Mitsubishi Electric’s
new high-speed fiber-optic technology, called coherent technology
1, enables 40 Gbps DWDM transmissions beyond 6,600 kilometers,
which was one of the key factors underpinning the upgrade contract.

“We are proud to be selected as the supplier for the AAG cable manufacturersNetwork
capacity upgrade,” said Masahiro Tsukamoto, general manager of
Mitsubishi Electric’s Telecommunication Systems Department. “Having
received an order for similar work on the transatlantic TAT-14 cable manufacturers
Network, Mitsubishi Electric will become the first supplier of 40 Gbps
upgrades to both transpacific and transatlantic networks. We now look
forward to building on these wins to assist other network operators with
high-quality upgrades.”

Mitsubishi Electric has been a leader in submarine cable manufacturerssystems ever
since supplying the world’s first 5 Gbps optically amplified repeaters
for a transpacific cable manufacturersin 1994. In 1999, the company supplied the
world’s first 10 Gbps transmission technology for transoceanic cables,
comprising 10 Gbps optically amplified repeaters and SLTE. Since 2004,
the company has performed upgrades for various undersea cable manufacturerssystems
while continuing to expand its capabilities in this field.
