Next-Generation PON will Support at Least 40 Gbps Downstream

What the next generation of fiber-to-the-premises networks will look like is becoming clear, now that members of the Full Service Access Network (FSAN) have reached an agreement on what they’re calling NG-PON2.

The agreement is not actually a standard, but instead outlines the direction that standards efforts will take, explained FSAN Chair Martin Carroll, who is also a distinguished member of the technical staff at Verizon?(News – Alert).

As FSAN considered the next generation of FTTP, various members proposed a wide range of approaches, including some that were “more elaborate and on the bleeding edge” and some that were “more current and readily available,” Carroll said.

Members ultimately settled on what they’re calling time and wavelength division multiplexing (TWDM) because the group believes that approach will meet target bandwidth and other requirements and can be developed relatively quickly. Standards could be ratified by as early as 2013 and products could be deployable by 2015, FSAN says.

Like today’s FTTP networks based on GPON, TWDM will rely on time division multiplexing but in addition will “use multiple wavelengths to stack TDM streams,” said Carroll.

The minimum bandwidth goal for an individual NG-PON2 is 40 Gbps downstream and 10 Gbps upstream, with total bandwidth shared among multiple subscribers. Noting that the current highest-speed PON, XG-PON, operates at 10 Gbps downstream, Carroll said the minimum target bandwidth levels should be easily reachable by using four wavelengths.

He added that systems with downstream bandwidth as great as 160 Gbps could be part of the standard, but he believes the 40 Gbps system will be considerably more cost effective.

The 40 Gbps requirement was driven by the per-customer bandwidth goal of 1 Gbps and apparently envisions each PON continuing to serve about 32 customers as with typical PONs deployed today. But bandwidth will not have to be allocated equally between all of the customers served from a single PON. Carroll believes network operators are likely to give residential customers service at rates below 1 Gbps, while business customer data rates will start around 1 Gbps.

Operators envision a wide range of use cases for NG-PON2, including support for mobile backhaul and potentially as a replacement for Sonet and SDH-based data services. Because NG-PON2 will use a point-to-multipoint approach, Carroll expects it to be more cost effective than point-to-point alternatives.

I asked Carroll whether the people creating the NG-PON2 standard would consider home run wiring – an approach that is gaining in popularity because some operators believe it is more future-proof than PON. Carroll said the emphasis is on PON, but he noted that the group also wants to have some wavelengths available for using WDM technology in more of a point-to-point configuration.

“It would be a PON architecture on the fiber side, but when you look at what the signal itself does, it would be more of a point-to-point allocation of the wavelength,” he said.

FSAN initially was primarily a North American organization dominated by the former RBOCs, but over the last decade it has become a much more global organization – and that reality has driven some of the requirements for NG-PON2. Carroll noted, for example, that NG-PON2 must co-exist not only with GPON, which has been widely deployed by Verizon, but also with XG-PON. The latter requirement was driven largely by China Telecom and China Unicom?(News – Alert), Carroll said.

FSAN expects to work through the International Telecommunications Union in creating the NG-PON2 standard – another example of the global nature of the technology. online casino .

Finisar Corporation Acquires RED-C Optical Networks

Finisar Corporation announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire the outstanding equity interests in RED-C?(News – Alert) Optical Networks, Inc. This will expand the portfolio of Finisar’s product lines for telecom applications by adding amplification technologies like Erbium Doped Fiber Amplification (EDFA), Raman amplification and dynamic Hybrid amplification.

In a release Eitan Gertel, Finisar’s CEO said, “RED-C has been an innovator in optical amplification, which we view as an increasingly critical technology as networks get faster and more complex.”

RED-C Optical is a Delaware- based corporation operating from Tel Aviv in Israel. RED-C’s amplification technologies are imperative for ROADM?(News – Alert) line cards and can extend the reach of transceivers and transponders. This will be particularly useful for 100 Gbps and 40 Gbps coherent transmission, ultra-long repeater-less links, and low latency networks, said officials.

?“As we have further penetrated the line card market with our differentiated WSS technology, we see this acquisition as a tremendous opportunity to further innovate for our customers and advance our vertical integration strategy,” Gertel added.

The demand for bandwidth has resulted in a major transition to coherent transmission and mesh topologies for optical networks. These are capable of delivering better resilience cost effectively but need advanced optical amplification technologies to optimize performance.

RED-C’s Hybrid amplifier products are equipped to offer better performance when compared to standalone EDFA and Raman optical amplifiers. They are based on RED-C’s core underlying IP and the RED-C’s Hybrid optical amplification platform and will soon replace standard EDFAs for next-generation LH and ULH optical networks. Further, greater opportunities are expected for the Hybrid Raman EDFA platform. Zayo Group Announces Completion of AboveNet Round of Fundraising

ZTE Launches Unique Multi-Application 400G/1T DWDM Prototype

ZTE?(News – Alert) Corporation has introduced its unique 400G/1T dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) multi-application network device prototype. The prototype was showcased by the major telecommunications equipment and network solutions provider, ZTE, at the 16th WDM & Next Generation Optical Networking Forum, held in Monaco.

Seven varied network applications can be executed by the device as per the different needs of the carriers.

Equivalent bandwidth capable of operating with a wide range of network applications is offered by the 400G/1T DWDM prototype. Extremely-long-haul applications can utilize the prototype’s Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing 400G/1T offering, supporting several subcarriers.

Metro and local applications can benefit from the prototype’s 16 quadrature amplitude modulation offering, which also includes the maximum bandwidth utilization rate in the industry. The product also offers long-haul applications a Nyquist WDM offering.

“ZTE is fully prepared to deploy solutions, products and services for the large-scale commercial global rollout of 100G and ultra-100G,” said Chen Yufei, general manager of the Bearer Network Product Line at ZTE.

Apart from C-band 80-wavelength applications, the 100G DWDM/ optical transport network (OTN) system from ZTE also supports regular PM-QPSK code pattern adjustment and coherent detection. The most powerful 100G transport capability is available in the industry, which uses the most sophisticated soft decision forward error correction technology around.

Revolutionary bearer network solutions, devices and services are offered by ZTE to enterprises across the globe. In 2010, a complete range of 100G bearing offerings was introduced by ZTE for the first time in the industry. ZTE’s portfolio of 100G products included switches, routers, WDM OTN equipment and end-to-end solutions from edge layer to core layer.

The unique 1Tb/s DWDM prototype system, along with its test output, was showcased by ZTE for the first time in the world in July 2011 at the Opto-Electronics and Communications Conference, held in Taiwan. ZTE has also filed several patents in 100G and ultra-100G technologies, which include 100G optical modules, framer, chip, system and other aspects of the technology.

As smartphones and an array of other type of next-generation devices are continually introduced to a corporate network, many infrastructures are folding under the pressure as they are not able to withstand the pressures associated with the newly added content.

Cross River Fiber to Extend Network to New Jersey Financial Sector

Cross River Fiber has announced plans to build a direct dark fiber network that connects Mahwah, New Jersey with other major financial hubs in the northern New Jersey area.

The announcement comes just days after NYSE Euronext (NYX) completed enhancements to its data center, opening up the facility to a greater number of service providers looking to acquire data center space and offer services within NYSE Technology’s Mahwah facility. Companies like Cross River Fiber are now able to offer “express connectivity” to financial services firms that require access to high bandwidth, resilient and ultra-low latency fiber infrastructures.

NASDAQ OMX Group Monday announced the launch of Express Connect, a low latency point-to-point network solution offering connectivity from the NASDAQ OMX Data Center in New Jersey to financial trading and co-location venues in New York, New Jersey, Chicago and Canada.
