OFS Partners with T8 for Faster Fiber Network

By admin, May 21, 2012 5:19 pm

100 Gigabit Ethernet (or 100GbE) is a high-speed computer network standard created by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE?(News – Alert)). They support sending Ethernet frames at 100 gigabits per second over multiple 25 Gbit/s lanes.

The fastest published Ethernet standard was historically 10 Gigabit Ethernet. They were first proposed as IEEE 802.3ba in 2008, and ratified in June 2010. Another variant was added in March 2011.

Many radical developments have since taken place in this field. Recently, OFS, a designer, manufacturer and supplier of fiber-optic network products, partnered with T8 a Russian designer, manufacturer and supplier of DWDM transmission equipment, to announce a new record in error-free 100G, together with 40G multi-channel transmission over 2000 km of OFS?(News – Alert) optical fiber.

The commercial use of 8 Tb/s long-haul DWDM systems is now getting nearer, which will help the service providers handle the increasing demand for high bandwidth. T8″ LLC is the only company in Russia developing DWDM systems, the company stated in a press release.

“The new achievement is a good example of cooperation between our companies resulting in a key benchmark in DWDM system performance operating over the proven transmission media, AllWave Zero Water Peak fiber,” said Alexander Mikilev, Marketing Director of OFS Russia. “The all-synthetic silica construction, tight geometry and zero-water peak performance of the AllWave ZWP fiber lowers attenuation and splice loss across the full spectrum of wavelengths to help achieve the longer reach and higher data rates.”

TMC’s?(News – Alert) Anuradha Shukla recently reported that the company was providing virtually invisible, faster fiber routing inside homes and MDUs by announcing the launch of its EZ-Bend InvisiLight Optical Solution. OFS’ EZ-Bend InvisiLight Optical Solution has received positive response in field trials and it will be available in June of this year. The solution should help businesses such as Cablevision Argentina.

KDDI, Rostelecom Connect Japan and Europe with the Shortest Latency

By admin, January 17, 2012 10:28 pm

KDDI America, the US division of KDDI Corporation, has teamed with Rostelecom (News – Alert), the biggest Russian National carrier, for the launch of 10Gbps wavelength service that facilitates a high quality broadband network connection between Tokyo and Europe with the shortest distance. Thanks to its close collaboration with the Rostelecom operation team, KDDI (News – Alert) has reportedly been operating at 100 percent availability on IPLC service between London and Tokyo.

The two companies signed an agreement early last year with Russia-Japan Cable Network (RJCN) and Transit Europe-Asia (TEA) for the upgrading and modification of the existing cable network. RJCN cable is laid in the Japan sea and immune from earthquake related damages.

This agreement allowed KDDI and Rostelecom to construct 10Gbps wavelength resources between Japan and Europe using the shortest route via Russia – RJCN/TEA route is 7-100msec shorter than the Indian Ocean route and 45 to 60msec shorter than the US/Atlantic Ocean route. The RJCN upgrade has just completed early this year.

According to KDDI, the 10Gbps wavelength service is ideal for addressing various demands such as low latency transmission and two-way real-time communications. Capable of supporting large capacity contents delivery including video transmission service, the network can be utilized for broadcasting various events in Europe and Africa.

The network is expected to play an important role to provide customers with cable diversity, KDDI further claimed.

A few months back, KDDI America reportedly invested approximately 85.5 percent of common shares in CDNetworks, a contents delivery network service provider headquartered in Seoul, Korea for approximately $167 million.

China, U.S. Powering Strong Broadband Adoption Rates

By admin, January 16, 2012 11:43 pm

More than 17 million households made the move to broadband in Q3 of 2011, marking the strongest quarterly growth rate in more than two years, according to a Broadband Forum study compiled by Point Topic.

The 3 percent quarterly increase brings the total number of global broadband subscribers up to 581.3 million, nearly 13 percent more than the third quarter of 2010. The gains were powered heavily by fiber deployments, which had a larger growth rate than any other traditional technology in the quarter.

DSL accounted for more lines added than fiber or cable modems, but only saw a 2 percent increase. Fiber now holds a 16 percent market share, compared to 61.5 percent for DSL and 19.5 percent for cable.

Hybrid fiber “will be where all the action is over the next few years,” Oliver Johnson, CEO of Point Topic, noted in a statement. “Consumers are showing signs of being ready to pay for faster connections and the hybrid solution set is a cost-effective way of getting relatively high speeds for them.”

Asia – and China in particular – continues to lead the globe in broadband deployments. More than 10 million broadband lines were added in Asia during the quarter, taking the total up to 246 million, or a whopping 42 percent of the global market. China accounts for well over half of all lines in Asia with 152 million, followed distantly by the U.S. with just over 90 million broadband lines.

We will probably have to wait until at least next year to see if President Obama’s broadband expansion plan stimulates the type of growth necessary to close the gap on China.

The global market for IPTV (News – Alert) technologies had a strong quarter, increasing 6 percent to 54.4 million subscribers. France and China continue to maintain the most robust IPTV markets, combining to account for around 42 million customers, but nations like the U.S., South Korea and Russia are starting to make strong moves.

“These are very healthy figures for Q3 and they demonstrate the ongoing strength of the broadband market,” added Robin Mersh, Broadband Forum (News – Alert) CEO.
