Next-Generation PON will Support at Least 40 Gbps Downstream

What the next generation of fiber-to-the-premises networks will look like is becoming clear, now that members of the Full Service Access Network (FSAN) have reached an agreement on what they’re calling NG-PON2.

The agreement is not actually a standard, but instead outlines the direction that standards efforts will take, explained FSAN Chair Martin Carroll, who is also a distinguished member of the technical staff at Verizon?(News – Alert).

As FSAN considered the next generation of FTTP, various members proposed a wide range of approaches, including some that were “more elaborate and on the bleeding edge” and some that were “more current and readily available,” Carroll said.

Members ultimately settled on what they’re calling time and wavelength division multiplexing (TWDM) because the group believes that approach will meet target bandwidth and other requirements and can be developed relatively quickly. Standards could be ratified by as early as 2013 and products could be deployable by 2015, FSAN says.

Like today’s FTTP networks based on GPON, TWDM will rely on time division multiplexing but in addition will “use multiple wavelengths to stack TDM streams,” said Carroll.

The minimum bandwidth goal for an individual NG-PON2 is 40 Gbps downstream and 10 Gbps upstream, with total bandwidth shared among multiple subscribers. Noting that the current highest-speed PON, XG-PON, operates at 10 Gbps downstream, Carroll said the minimum target bandwidth levels should be easily reachable by using four wavelengths.

He added that systems with downstream bandwidth as great as 160 Gbps could be part of the standard, but he believes the 40 Gbps system will be considerably more cost effective.

The 40 Gbps requirement was driven by the per-customer bandwidth goal of 1 Gbps and apparently envisions each PON continuing to serve about 32 customers as with typical PONs deployed today. But bandwidth will not have to be allocated equally between all of the customers served from a single PON. Carroll believes network operators are likely to give residential customers service at rates below 1 Gbps, while business customer data rates will start around 1 Gbps.

Operators envision a wide range of use cases for NG-PON2, including support for mobile backhaul and potentially as a replacement for Sonet and SDH-based data services. Because NG-PON2 will use a point-to-multipoint approach, Carroll expects it to be more cost effective than point-to-point alternatives.

I asked Carroll whether the people creating the NG-PON2 standard would consider home run wiring – an approach that is gaining in popularity because some operators believe it is more future-proof than PON. Carroll said the emphasis is on PON, but he noted that the group also wants to have some wavelengths available for using WDM technology in more of a point-to-point configuration.

“It would be a PON architecture on the fiber side, but when you look at what the signal itself does, it would be more of a point-to-point allocation of the wavelength,” he said.

FSAN initially was primarily a North American organization dominated by the former RBOCs, but over the last decade it has become a much more global organization – and that reality has driven some of the requirements for NG-PON2. Carroll noted, for example, that NG-PON2 must co-exist not only with GPON, which has been widely deployed by Verizon, but also with XG-PON. The latter requirement was driven largely by China Telecom and China Unicom?(News – Alert), Carroll said.

UCAN Network Poised for Speed and Technology Breakthroughs

One of the most ambitious projects to win a broadband stimulus award was the U.S. Unified Community Anchor Network (UCAN), which won a $62.5 million grant to interconnect existing academic and research networks nationwide over a 100 Gbps nationwide backbone. I checked in this week with Mark Johnson, executive director for UCAN, to get more details on the project—including the applications it will support and the new technologies that will underlie the network.

The UCAN project is essentially an expansion of the existing research and academic network operated by Internet 2 that also will entail upgrading the Internet 2 network from 10 Gbps to 100 Gbps. As Johnson explained, the result is likely to be the first nationwide 100 G network in the U.S. Some other network operators, including Verizon (News – Alert), have deployed 100 G but only on certain routes.

The word “community” in the UCAN name refers to the fact that it is expected to support high-speed communications to more than 100,000 anchor institutions nationwide, including schools, universities, libraries, health institutions, local government and public safety entities, and other community centers.

Unlike many stimulus projects, the UCAN project does not require the laying of new fiber optic cabling. Instead network engineers are acquiring a dark fiber pair nationwide and equipping it with 100 Gbps per -channel electronics. When I asked Johnson if decision-makers had any difficulty finding dark fiber everywhere they needed it, he said finding fiber on nationwide routes wasn’t difficult.

“But it is a challenge to get them to sell it to you,” he said.

Nevertheless the UCAN people were successful in obtaining what they needed and already have turned up some 100 Gbps routes.

Johnson outlined some of the applications the network, reserved for academic and research use, is expected to support—including health information exchanges, telemedicine, and gene sequencing.

With regard to gene sequencing, Johnson said, “Individual instruments are becoming less expensive so data is proliferating hugely quickly in fields that weren’t traditionally large data producers.”

Internet 2 also provides connectivity to the Hadron particle collider in Switzerland, which supports physics research efforts and remains the world’s biggest producer of data—at least for now. Within a few years the collider soon will have competition for that title when a square kilometer array telescope currently under development comes on line, Johnson said—and Internet 2 is expected to provide connectivity for the telescope.  

Although plans are not yet definite, Johnson said the UCAN/ Internet 2 network also may play a role in supporting the nationwide mobile broadband public safety network that Congress recently approved as well as plans for a next-generation 9-1-1 system. As envisioned, the next-generation 9-1-1 system would need higher bandwidth connectivity to support multimedia capability.

Pioneering new technologies

Internet 2 and National Lambda Rail, another nationwide academic and research network, have a heritage of pioneering new networking technologies that later find their way in to commercial networks—and the UCAN project is likely to further that tradition.

For example, Johnson expects to see the UCAN/Internet 2 network use software defined networking (SDN). The idea behind SDN, which includes initiatives such as OpenFlow, is to make the network control plane centrally accessible through an application programming interface.  Johnson sees SDN as a “powerful technology” that could enable networks to be configured on the fly to meet the requirements of particular applications.

Johnson believes the academic and research community is ahead of commercial network operators in its work on SDN. But if the academic and research networkers see clear benefits from the SDN approach, I’m sure it won’t be long before commercial network operators follow their lead in implementing the technology.

Network Adds 162 Miles of Fiber in Colorado

Through a new alliance between EAGLE-Net and Zyo Group, the residents of Colorado may see their high speed fiber network be expended very soon. The agreement was signed recently between the two companies and should bring a boost to the speed that many households can get through their Internet connection, thanks to the partnership which will see over 162 miles of fiber being lay down across Colorado.

EAGLE-Net is a Colorado intergovernmental entity which operates a co-op initiative to distribute high speed broadband services to more than 230 local community institutions. Under the new agreement, Zayo Group (News – Alert) will extend that capability thanks to the new fiber links. The expanded network will mostly cover locations around Denver and Burlington, in Eastern Colorado.

This is the second such expansion that the two organizations have completed where Zayo already provided EAGLE-Net with over 675 miles of fiber footprint within Colorado and Wyoming. This type of connection allows the various institutions under its jurisdiction to have better connectivity to the broader Internet, along with services from other agencies and organizations.

“This is a very good deal for the company, along with a much needed upgrade for the government entity. It follows earlier deals with other companies. Randy Zila, CEO of EAGLE-Net said “This IRU will help us to fulfill part of the requirements set forth by the $100.6 million Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) infrastructure grant which mandates that the statewide EAGLE-Net network be complete by August 31, 2013.”  

The fiber used is often called dark fiber, which are long stretches of cables lay down for various reasons in the past, mostly as part of the dotcom boom era, and now reused to bring connectivity to rural areas. This dark fiber is present across the country and is often used to provide new connections to places that otherwise would have no high speed access.

Zayo Group owns and manages over 2,421 miles of dark and lit fiber around the Rockey Mountain regions in four different states. Based in Louisville, Colo., the private company provides connectivity to many local ISPs and handles data centers, Internet content and service companies. Zayo was recently named one of the Denver-area’s Fastest Growing Private Companies by the Denver Business Journal.

Cisco and SURFnet Complete 100G Alien Wavelength Demonstration between Amsterdam and Geneva

With a commitment to technology that supports the rapid growth of new applications and services in the international NREN community, Europe-based research and education network SURFnet recently demonstrated 100G dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) solution between Amsterdam and Geneva.

SURFnet completed a technology test of Cisco’s 100G DWDM solution between the National Supercomputing Center, SARA, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, using the Cisco (News – Alert) ONS 15454 M6 Multiservice Transport Platform. online casino canada .

An error-free transmission of a 100G alien wavelength using Cisco single carrier coherent optical technology was observed between Amsterdam and Geneva across SURFnet’s existing 1650km optical DWDM system. According to Cisco, this evaluation demonstrates the ability of the company to offer 100 Gigabit technologies, which meet the requirements of the Next Generation Internet for core, edge, data center, and transport. 

As a research and education network, SURFnet facilitates collaboration between researchers, teachers, and students in the Netherlands using information and computing technology. Together with partners, it offers high speed communication services between leading innovation centers and universities in Europe and throughout the world.

According to a press release, the test involved introducing 100G single carrier optical interfaces into SURFnet’s existing optical infrastructure made up of a combination of 10G, 40G, and 100G wavelengths. The 100G DWDM solution by Cisco was operational in a short duration without any disruption to the existing network.

The test indicates that SURFnet can leverage its current infrastructure and help protect its network investment while supporting new 100G data services over the existing fiber infrastructure. Precisely, the 100G technology enables SURFnet to use its existing 50GHz spectrum band more efficiently and provide cost-effective all-optical connectivity across international borders.

The Cisco ONS 15454 M6 platform, which was used for the testing, can support 42 x 100G wavelengths in a single bay.

Roeland Nuijts, optical network architect, SURFnet, said in a statement, “This 100G alien wavelength demonstration is another important step in the future of international networking across geographical, technical and administrative borders. Being able to use high-bandwidth wavelengths over open transmission systems from different equipment vendors supports new approaches to networking. The use of all-optical alien wavelength 100G technology is what will enable cost-effective international research networking.”

The CPU platform facilitates a LAN connection via Gigabit Ethernet. The access points und clients also possess potential-free contacts as well as one V.24 and one USB interface that can be used for analog or DSL modem connections for WAN routing or remote maintenance. All combinations operate at temperatures in the range -40°C to +70°C and also fulfil stringent demands as regards shock and vibration resistance.

Among other features, the quality-of-service functions specified by IEEE 802.11e allow the prioritization of voice or video streams. An integrated IP router can be used to construct up to eight sub-networks.

The access points and clients support all encryption and authentication methods compliant with IEEE 802.11i and 802.1x/EAP as well as WEP, WPA, WPA2, TKIP, AES and LEPS, and there are also WLAN port and protocol filters, a radius server, and a firewall equipped with intrusion detection. Rogue AP detection is also available via background scanning and WLAN monitor.

The devices in the BAT-R series have robust metal housings and are designed to be mounted on DIN rails. The units in the BAT-F range were developed for field applications. They too have robust metal housings that are additionally salt spray resistant. Thanks to their Nema and UL certification and robust M12 connectors they can be installed on walls or poles both indoors and out.

The new OpenBAT range from its Hirschmannâ„¢ product range makes Belden the first manufacturer to offer industrial standard WLAN access points and clients that can be configured via the internet. “This concept gives users maximum flexibility,” says Product Manager Olaf Schilperoort, “because they can configure the optimal equipment version for the requirements of their application, hence they only pay for the features they really need.”
