B&B Electronics Europe Deploys Communications Network for Volvo Ocean Race Galway Grand Finale

B&B Electronics recently announced that its European operation has provided an extensive fiber, cellular and wireless communications network for the Volvo Ocean Race Galway Grand Finale.

The fiber, cellular and wireless communications network is deployed across 10 event locations, including the docks area, event headquarters, media center, Race Village, Global Village and seaside resort of Salthill. Company officials said that the network supports security, crowd management, Web feeds, live TV and radio broadcasts, video streaming, credit card and point-of-sale facilities.

In addition, it also supports commentator feeds, big screen displays and interfaces to Volvo’s own IT Group.

Previously, Galway based B&B Electronics Europe provided network expertise for the Galway leg of the Volvo Ocean Race in 2009. The company is again providing as well as monitoring the physical communications infrastructure including Internet access and a ruggedized network that is used by the race teams, media and Galway event management teams.

In order to ensure network redundancy and make difficult remote connections, fiber, cellular and other wireless communications technologies were used, according to company officials.

There is a 20 km of fiber in the docks area that includes sections microtrenched into the ground as well as marine fiber installed by divers. Using its GhostBridge Wireless Ethernet Bridges, the company created point-to-point equipment links across the harbor to establish Internet connectivity at remote locations — where wired infrastructure was not feasible.

Additional network equipment included the company’s ELinx Ethernet Extenders, ELinx ESW Series Ethernet Switches, Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) Switches, and Cellular Wireless Routers used for failover connectivity.

Launched last year in February, GhostBridge creates a transparent, secure, high-speed — up to 150Mbps — point-to-point link between two remote devices or networks, eliminating up to 15km of expensive and damage-prone wiring, said company officials.

B&B worked with the Galway event organizer, Let’s Do It Global, to provide the network.

Corning Incorporated Aids FibreCo Telecommunications with its Optical Fiber in South Africa

Corning?(News – Alert) Incorporated has been helping FibreCo Telecommunications, a South African open-access network provider, in deploying its optical fiber in South Africa.

FibreCo Telecommunications is using Corning’s SMF-28e+(R) LL and LEAF(R) optical fibers in its new ultra-high-speed, long-distance fiber optic network in South Africa. This unique combination of low attenuation values and low polarization mode dispersion (PMD) with ITU G.652.D-compliant performance is expected to bring longer spans and reach. Also, SMF-28e+ LL fiber enables more repair margin which is important when fiber is damaged or cut, said the company officials.

This project first involves a 2,000-km link between Johannesburg and Cape Town connecting Bloemfontein, East London, and Port Elizabeth. The company officials confirmed that the additional routes will be built in the next phase to enhance network redundancy and resilience. The project’s total distance is expected to cover 12,000 km.

Minnesota Telecom (NESC) Deploys CDC Optical Network for CALIENT and Cyan in Northeast Minnesota

Minnesota Telecom’s Northeast Service Cooperative (NESC) recently selected CALIENT Technologies and Cyan, Inc. to deploy a revolutionary fiber-optic network to deliver a wide range of data services, at speeds up to 10Gbps, to customers in rural Northeast Minnesota.

Both these companies were selected by NESC, for their colorless, directionless, contentionless (CDC) reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM?(News – Alert)), using 3D MEMS photonic switching to deliver a cost-effective high add-drop ratio solution with complete remote management, provisioning and testing capabilities.

NESC officials said these capabilities are very useful to support the entire network spanning 14 network nodes and 915 fiber miles.

Paul Brinkman, executive director of NESC and CEO of Minnesota Telecom said that the Northeast Service Cooperative is a key regional resource for education, healthcare, information technology and economic development in Northeast Minnesota.

The new network is said to offer broadband services to more than 340,000 residents and hundreds of schools, colleges, clinics, hospitals, libraries, critical services government agencies, tribal governments and telecommunications partners within those counties.

“Our mission to bring much-needed high speed data services to such a diverse, rural area has been a collaborative effort among our members and partners,” Brinkman added. “The flexibility and scalability of the Cyan/CALIENT network solution uniquely solves the challenges of this project and we’re excited to be the first application to successfully deploy this architecture.”

Operating in eight counties in Northeast Minnesota, NESC public corporation is a backbone to many networks and receives external funding of $43.5 million from a federal broadband stimulus award under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the USDA’s Rural Utilities Service.

MCNC Completes First Phase of Golden LEAF Rural Broadband Initiative

MCNC recently confirmed that the initial round of the $144-million Golden LEAF Rural Broadband Initiative (GLRBI) has been officially completed. Working with FRC LLC, its first-phase commercial partner who contributed $4 million into the project, fiber is now officially available to serve commercial businesses and last-mile consumer broadband needs in western and southeastern North Carolina.

All broadband fiber associated with this first phase of the project has gone live and is already providing service to Community Anchor Institutions (CAIs)  such as universities, community colleges, healthcare facilities, K-12 schools, public health facilities, libraries, research institutions, along with other sectors of CAIs in North Carolina.

“This first phase of the project already is having a positive impact on student learning, patient outcomes in health care, economic outcomes in job creation and community development, and is accelerating innovation and research all across the state,” said Joe Freddoso, President and CEO at MCNC. “Our goal is to continue creating infrastructure that meets the advanced needs of research, education and health care while stabilizing costs to consumers and small businesses in areas where affordable broadband currently isn’t available.”

The GLRBI receives significant funding in the form of private donations and investments, as well as through grants from U.S. Department of Commerce’s Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP). The GLRBI had earlier received a $24 million private investment from the Golden LEAF Foundation.

When the second phase of the project is completed, the GLRBI will have widened the reach and capacity of the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN) in the state.

“In carrying out its three-part mission of teaching, research and outreach, the University of North Carolina is increasingly reliant on technology and broadband infrastructure,” said Mike Murphy, Chairman of the MCNC Board of Directors. “These critical upgrades and the expansion of the North Carolina Research and Education Network will help ensure that our UNC campuses have the digital infrastructure required to scale to our future needs. Every sector of education in the state will benefit from this important investment.”

In June 2011, federal approval was given to MCNC to begin the second phase of the GLRBI. MCNC has since mobilized efforts and made major progress on this portion of the project, which is estimated to be thrice the size of the first phase.
