LS Cable & System develops air blown fiber optic composite power cable

By admin, February 1, 2012 9:14 am

Wednesday, Feb 01, 2012

â–  Helps for building more efficient smart grids by combining 144 cables into one
â–  Immediately after development, LS Cable & System received an order from Energy Australia worth $10 million.
â–  As it is easy to build and manage, it has quickly become popular among domestic and overseas power authorities as well as global construction companies.

Seoul, Korea, Feburary, 1st – On the 1st, LS Cable & System (CEO & Chairman: Christopher Koo) introduced a new 12/20kV air-blown fiber optic composite power cable that combines both electric power and communication cables, necessary for building smart grids and communication networks, into one. Immediately after the announcement the Company entered into a supply contract with Energy Australia worth $10 million (KRW11.2 billion).

The most salient characteristic of this cable is that unlike conventional fiber optic composite cables installation of this product is done using high-pressure air. With this new installation method a tube of 3∼5mm in diameter is installed inside the cable and the fiber optics are pushed inside by the high-pressure air. Existing fiber optic composite cables can combine a maximum of 16 core wires into one, but this new method makes it possible to bind up to 144 optical cable core wires.

A key feature of the air blown fiber optic composite power cable is that it is also scalable which makes it possible to meet the needs of customers who want to build-out power grids and communication networks as demand arises. Also, unlike conventional fiber optic composite cables, the duel structure consisting of a plastic tube and sheath protects the cable, thereby greatly reducing the risk of damage. And because only the internal cable needs to be replaced using air pressure, operating and investment costs are also reduced. Another advantage is that the optical cable can be used to monitor the temperature and state of the cables in real time.

Mr. Heonsang Lee, Director of Overseas Sales, said, “We will work hard to promote this product targeting domestic and overseas power authorities that want to replace their existing power grids and build new smart and power grids. We will also target global construction companies that want to provide a residential environment that better fits the new lifestyle of their residents. Our goal is to turn over $40 million in the next five years.”

Belden Unveils New Brilliance Audio Snake Cable Lines

By cableunion, January 27, 2012 6:45 pm

Belden announced the launch of its outdoor and direct burial analog audio, plenum jacketed and plenum Banana Peel snake cable lines.

It was revealed in a release that the new Brilliance Audio Snake Cables feature a robust construction which also has superior flexibility making it highly suitable for indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.

Belden, specializing in signal transmission solutions for mission-critical applications, provides the Brilliance Audio Snake Cables for in-the-field and permanent installation to connect multiple channels in low-level (microphone) and high-level componentry.

The applications where they can be used include console board equipment for recording, post production and sound system installations, said officials.

Most useful where ruggedness is imperative, the product line includes three cable series, namely waterblocked, plenum, and Banana Peel constructions. Featuring various benefits the cable series sports a foil shield that is bonded to the jacket. This construction enables them to maintain high performance with the ease of termination.

The waterblocked product series, used in direct burial and suitable for outdoor installations, features six standard product codes with constructions ranging from 1 to 12 pairs. This makes the product more advantageous when compared to gel installations.

Belden officials added that the plenum product series offers nine product codes including the recent additions of 4, 6, 8 and 12-pair constructions with an overall jacket. No heat shrink is needed as the pairs are individually jacketed facilitating field termination.

The patented Banana Peel construction offers 2, 4, and 6-pair audio snake cables forming easy-to-install composite cables. The component cables are bundled and affixed to a center spline, so overall jacket is not required. Easy to install, the Banana Peel design needs less effort and time compared to traditional jacketed products.

Belden announced the roll out of the GarrettCom brand’s enhanced IEC (News – Alert) 61850-compatible, substation-hardened managed switches targeted for data-intensive power utility applications such as Smart Grid. The Magnum 10KG Managed Switches offer up to eight Gb ports to support data-intensive Smart Grid applications. Magnum is a trademarked product line of Belden’s GarrettCom (News – Alert) brand.

Wednesday, Dec 14, 2011

Encore Wire Corporation (nasdaq global select:WIRE) announced today that the Company is building a new 202,000 square-foot manufacturing plant on its McKinney, Texas campus. The Company projects expenditures for this project, including related upgrades of railroad and road access to Encore’s McKinney complex, will be approximately $25 million to $30 million. The majority of these expenditures will be made in 2012. The plant expansion is part of the Company’s capital expenditure plan for 2012 that will also include the purchase of manufacturing equipment to produce aluminum wire and cable. The Company estimates its total capital expenditures for 2012 to be between $33 million and $40 million.

Commenting on the announcement, Daniel L. Jones, President and Chief Executive Officer of Encore Wire Corporation, said, “Encore Wire has experienced steady growth throughout its history. In order to plan for our future and continue the long-term growth of the Company we have continued to increase our product offerings to our existing customer base in the building wire category. In 2006, we opened a new armored cable plant, and in 2008, we opened a plant dedicated to the production of large tray cable. We continually canvass our independent manufacturer’s reps and the electrical distributors to whom we sell to determine what products they are purchasing that may make sense for us to produce and sell. We believe broadening our product line with aluminum not only allows us to increase sales incrementally with new products, but also gives us the ability to gain sales on our existing products on orders that we may not have previously received because we did not sell aluminum wire. We continue to believe that copper will be the conductor of choice in most building wire applications, but we will offer aluminum to those customers who want it.

“Our strong balance sheet allows us the luxury of entertaining these projects at all points of business cycles. We have ready access to the capital required to fund this project in this industry downturn and we will be poised to take even greater advantage of future up swings in business. In conjunction with this project we will make the necessary upgrades to the rail and road access into our complex to provide for this project and potential future growth. We will continue to manage the Company for the long term and will make capital improvements to allow for sustained growth, while ensuring our balance sheet remains strong. We have no long-term debt, and our revolving line of credit is paid down to zero. In addition, we have $15.2 million in cash as of September 30, 2011.”

Encore Wire Corporation is a leading manufacturer of a broad range of copper electrical building wire for interior wiring in commercial and industrial buildings, homes, apartments, and manufactured housing. The Company is focused on maintaining a high level of customer service with low-cost production and the addition of new products that complement its current product line. The matters discussed in this news release, other than the historical financial information, including statements about the copper pricing environment, profitability and shareholder value, may include forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties, including fluctuations in the price of copper and other raw materials, the impact of competitive pricing and other risks detailed from time to time in the Company’s reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. TPC Adds 500-K Aramid Fiber Cable to Current Line of High Temperature Products

By admin, August 24, 2011 4:50 am

Tuesday, Aug 23, 2011

TPC Wire & Cable Corp. adds Aramid fiber jacketed high temperature cable to their extensive offering of electrical cable, connectors and accessories. TPC supplies power and control cable, connector assemblies and accessories for a wide range of applications in Utility, Food & Beverage, Mining, Crane Services, and the Wood, Pulp & Paper markets.

TPC Wire & Cable Corp. has added 500-K single and multi-conductor cable to their current high temperature cable line known as Thermo-Trex®. The addition of the 500-K product line fills a need for high temperature/high performance cables for use in abrasive environments.

The 500-K is jacketed with an Aramid fiber to provide outstanding protection against abrasion. The insulation is silicone which performs extremely well in high temperature environments. Designed for industrial applications, the product is rated for 600 volts and carries a 200° C temperature rating.

The uniqueness of this cable is the fluoropolymer layer under the Aramid fiber jacket. In dynamic/flexing applications this layer acts as a lubricant between the silicone and Aramid layers reducing internal abrasion, increasing cable performance and prolonging cable life making this an ideal choice for high temperature dynamic applications such as festoon systems. The fluoropolymer layer also provides an additional moisture barrier for added protection in harsh environments.

“We’re continuously looking to improve the life and performance of cables to reduce down time and associated costs. The value-added proposition of the fluoropolymer layer in our 500-K is that it will improve cable performance in dynamic flexing applications and extend product life, achieving our objective of reducing end-user costs and downtime” said TPC Product Manager David Sedivy.

Superior performance is a function of construction, materials, and matching the right cable accessory to the application. TPC provides high performance problem solving products, custom engineered products, and a dedicated team of sales professionals. Boasting a 96% on time delivery performance, TPC’s deep inventory levels allow for quick delivery.
