InfoRelay Deploys Ekinops 360 Platform to Interconnect Data Centers and Colocation Facilities

Using the Ekinops?(News – Alert) 360 optical transport platform, InfoRelay plans to interconnect its Washington D.C. area data centers and colocation facilities including the company’s recently opened Dulles Exchange data center, in Herndon, Virginia.

The Ekinops 360 dynamic, multi-reach transport system is stated to be a next generation optical transport platform that provides DWDM and CWDM in a single product and addresses metro, regional, and long haul applications. Powered by the T-Chip (Transport on a chip) technology, it is designed to handle data rates from 100Mbps to 100G today and can scale to 400G and beyond. It also offers a wide range of scalable options ranging from “pay-as-you-grow” amplifiers to a truly scalable ROADM?(News – Alert) and 100G solution.

InfoRelay’s initial Ekinops 360 deployment will provide transport for gigabit Ethernet, fiber channel, and 10G LAN services over a high-capacity fiber-optic infrastructure and should connect its four data center operations in northern Virginia.

“We needed a scalable, reliable, and cost-effective solution that supported all the necessary protocols, such as Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, video, and SONET. We were also looking for a platform that would allow us to provide lit services to those strategic customers of ours looking for bandwidth between facilities. We found that Ekinops provided us with that flexibility at the right price points and our trial confirmed that the Ekinops solution was the right choice”, commented Russell Weiss, president of InfoRelay, in a press release.

Ekinops explained that the advent of cloud computing has resulted in an increase in data center capacity requirements and it is in need of a platform that is operationally simple and extremely reliable and its 360 platform will suit these needs.

Vitesse Intros Burst-Mode Architecture for XG-PON1 FTTH Applications

The newly unveiled advanced burst-mode architecture for XG-PON1 Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) applications from Vitesse is supposed to enable mass deployment of fiber-to-the-home systems and also allow OEMs and vendors to raise the volume of production of XG-PON1 systems.

Asymmetric 10G-PON (XG-PON1) is supposed to be a computer networking standard for data links, capable of delivering shared Internet access of 10 Gbit/s downstream and 2.5 Gbit/s upstream data rates. The new Vitesse advanced XG-PON1 OLT receiver chipset is comprised of the company’s VSC7719 transimpedance amplifier (TIA (News – Alert)) and VSC7729 post amplifier and is claimed to have the necessary features to exceed the XG-PON1 standard.

Vitesse explained that the new PON PRO architecture’s integrated chip reset and monitor features does not require any external components to support burst mode operation and it is targeted at next-generation XG-PON1 applications in IP Edge networks.

The VSC7719 transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and VSC7729 post amplifier (PA) together form a complete OLT optical receiver chipset solution for 10 Gigabit passive optical networks (XG-PON) exceeding the chipset exceeds XG-PON1 requirements with better than -33 dBm (News – Alert) APD sensitivity at pre-FEC BER threshold of 10-4.

Some of the notable features of the new architecture are: burst average received power monitor; reset through the high-speed data interface; fast settling time; differential data ready output; selectable LVPECL or LVCML outputs; auto-squelching for eliminating random noise during long guard times; and more.

“Today’s XG-PON1 solutions are mostly discrete, requiring several components, and face space constraints and performance challenges that cannot be supported in volume production. Our new PON PRO architecture solves builds on Vitesse’s technology to solve these challenges and advance Ethernet throughout IP Edge networks. With its high degree of integration and burst-mode capabilities, Vitesse’s solution can be used in industry-standard SFP modules, making it easy to support our customers ramping production of their XG-PON1 systems,” claimed Aditi Vaghashia, product marketing at Vitesse, in a press release.

In other news, Vitesse recently announced its latest laser and modulator driver, the VSC7982-40. Targeted at high bandwidth applications in SONET, Ethernet, and Fiber Channel networks, the four-channel device can support emerging 40G and 100G optical networks, ideal as building blocks for service providers upgrading networks to offer premium data services to subscribers.

3M Demonstrates Twin Axial Cable Assembly Solutions

3M (News – Alert) announced new high-speed products from its 3M Twin Axial Cable Assembly lineup and they were demonstrated at the DesignCon 2012. The new solutions are supposed to offer design engineers with low-profile foldable cabling options for internal and external electronics applications and also enhance the airflow and cable management in them.

3M explained that the new cable assemblies are based on 3M’s SL8800 Series, a flat foldable and longitudinally shielded high-performance twin axial cable ribbon cable. Users who need high data-rate applications, including servers, storage, switches and data center networks, can employ the 3M Cable Assemblies for SFP+, 3M Cable Assemblies for QSFP+ and the 3M High- Routability External MiniSAS Cable Assembly 8G26 Series. The assemblies are also compatible with InfiniBand, Ethernet, Fiber Channel and SAS (News – Alert) protocols.

The company added that the 3M SL8800 Series Cable is an optimal solution for space constrained systems. This cable is unjacketed, extremely thin and can even be folded with minimal loss or performance impact. SL8000 Series Cable can route along the sides of cabinets and through narrow openings in densely packaged equipment.

Finisar Launches Quadwire FDR Active Optical Cable for InfiniBand Fiber Channel Applications

Finisar, a provider of active cables that accelerate storage, networking, and computing connectivity, has launched its Quadwire FDR active optical cable. Suited for InfiniBand 4xFDR and 4×16x Fiber Channel applications, the Quadwire FDR cable provides high-bandwidth performance with 4 lanes at 14 Gb/s per lane in a standard QSFP+ form factor.

High Performance Computing (HPC) and Datacenter markets demand higher speed interconnections to support bandwidth needs.

FDR active optical cables are designed to use 14 Gb/s vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) technology to provide data throughput. The FDR active optical cables are compact, lightweight and flexible to support very high-density deployments, company officials said.

“The commercial availability of our Quadwire FDR cable illustrates our strong commitment to providing leading InfiniBand cable technology in the growing HPC and data center markets,” said Steffen Koehler, product line manager at Finisar, in a statement.

Recently, Finisar Corporation announced  that added a new switch to its ROADM (News – Alert) product portfolio, the 1×20 high port count WSS with Flexgrid technology.

The 1×20 WSS with Flexgrid is designed to enable telecommunications carriers to migrate to higher data rates, interconnect more fiber directions at each node, and offer colorless, directionless and contentionless ROADM operation.
