General Cable Corporation to acquire alcan cable, the wire and cable business of Rio Tinto plc

General Cable Corporation (NYSE: BGC) (the Company) announced today that it has agreed to acquire Alcan Cable, the wire and cable business of Rio Tinto plc (Rio Tinto) (LSE: RIO). The purchase price is $185 million in cash, subject to customary adjustments primarily related to working capital levels at closing as provided in the definitive purchase agreement. The Company expects to use its Asset Based Revolving Credit Facility to principally fund the transaction. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2012, subject to receipt of regulatory approval.

Alcan Cable employs approximately 1,050 associates in its aluminum cable manufacturing and distribution facilities servicing the energy and construction markets in the United States , Canada , Mexico , and China. In 2011, Alcan Cable reported operating margins in the low single digit range. On an annual basis, the Company estimates the acquisition will contribute approximately $650-700 million in revenues at current metal prices. Over a cycle, Alcan Cable’s operating margin profile is expected to be consistent with the Company’s existing North American businesses as manufacturing, logistics, and purchasing synergies are realized. With these synergies, an improving North American market and an accelerating greenfield operation in China, the transaction is expected to create shareholder value in the near term.

Nexans wins West of Duddon Sands deal

US Seismic Signs Licensing Agreement with Northrop Grumman

US Seismic Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of Acorn Energy, Inc., recently announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with Northrop Grumman?(News – Alert) Corporation for the latter’s fiber-optic technology patents. According to the terms of the agreement, USSI will use Northrop Grumman’s licensed patents in refining high sensitivity oilfield fiber-optic geophones.

Northrop Grumman has applied its expertise in fiber-optic technology to develop a line of Fiber-Optic Acoustic Sensors (FOAS). The FOAS comprises only passive fiber-optic elements, and contain very few parts and no electronics. One remote transmit/receive station houses all the necessary optoelectronics. The data are transmitted on a few single mode fibers, over distances of more than 100 kilometers. Northrop Grumman has also designed and developed high channel count fiber-optic towed arrays for submarine applications.

“USSI’s new all-optical geophone is designed to replace less capable legacy magnet and coil geophone sensors currently used for oilfield exploration and production,” said Jim Andersen, CEO of USSI. “The USSI fiber-optic geophone provides superior performance in every key category, including sensitivity, noise floor, distortion, bandwidth and dynamic range—and all at a substantially lower cost.”

Meanwhile, Unitech Composites and Structures, a member of the AGC Composites Group, announced the achievement of Fully Approved DPD Certification through Northrop Grumman. The certification facilitates a more efficient communication process between Unitech and Northrop Grumman through the electronic exchange of model-based engineering data. Digital Product Definition (DPD) are the electronic data elements that specify the geometry and all design requirements for a product, as well as the use of this data throughout an integrated system using computer aided design (CAD), computer aided manufacturing (CAM), and coordinated measurement systems (CAD/CAM).

Bi-PON Technology Cuts Ten Times Normal Fiber-to-the-Home Power Consumption

Imagine a new data processing protocol that improves power consumption of information and communications networks so much that the power saved is the equivalent of taking half a million cars off of the road. No, this isn’t science fiction or a farfetched ‘go green’ initiative. This is a new technology – called Bi-PON, just announced by the GreenTouch Consortium.

Analysts expect fiber-in-the-home to grow to over 142 million subscribers over the next five years, nearly double the current number. Within optical network units (ONU), current energy consumption is increasing dramatically with network speed. By simplifying circuitry and making data flow more efficient, Bi-PON cuts power from an average of two watts to 200 microwatts.

The process is energy-intensive, with up to 99 percent of data dropped, as it is intended for other ONUs on the PON.

With Bi-PON, every ONU still receives every bit of data. But the ONU can determine which bits are intended for different ONUs, and can drop them before the bits undergo heavy, energy-intensive processing. This change results in the tenfold reduction in power consumption.

Power consumption is now proportional to the number of bits the user consumes, instead of the full incoming PON line rate. Because the data flowing in processing blocks matches the outgoing rate, required buffer memory is eliminated or significantly reduced. This “just-in-time” data processing causes an additional reduction in power consumption.

GreenTouch will showcase the new technology in a live webinar, concurrently available as a podcast.

“Implementing Bi-PON over current technologies will have the energy savings equivalent to the carbon impact of permanently taking all the cars in a city like San Francisco off the road,” said Gee Rittenhouse, chairman of GreenTouch. “We are making great progress toward our goal and are planning to make advances like this across all of our 25 research projects that are currently underway.”

GreenTouch is a consortium, dedicated to improving the energy efficiency of information and communications technology networks by a factor of 1,000. Bit-Interleaved Passive Optical Network is the second major new technology released by the consortium en route to its goal.

Cable laying complete at Sheringham Shoal

The installation of the strings of cables connecting the wind turbines to the offshore substations at the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm is now complete.

A total of 56 kilometres of cables – known as infield cables – have been installed by contractor Visser & Smit using the 86m vessel Team Oman, which has been working on and off at the wind farm site in the Greater Wash for 18 months. As core com- ponents, Hadoop MapReduce and HDFS are constantly being improved and 122 Part III: Big Management provide great starting points, but you need something more.. The vessel is now en route to Sunderland for demobilisation before moving on to her next job.

The wind farm, operated by Scira Offshore Energy, has 36 of its 88 turbines in place and is scheduled for completion in late summer 2012.

Project Director Rune Rønvik said every milestone is a culmination of much planning, coordination and effort and the teams involved in the cable construction and installation are rightly pleased to have completed this important stage in the wind farm’s progress.

“Working on 24-hour rotations, around 50 personnel have been involved in the cable casino online/a> installation which is a significant effort and one to be congratulated,” he added.

Although all the infield cables have been laid, Visser & Smit has one final task, which is to trench the cable into the seabed to ensure it is protected from fishing gear, vessel anchors and other potential hazards.

The 87m Toisa Warrior will continue to out the cable burial work, with completion expected to be by this summer.

The wind farm project is owned equally by Statoil and Statkraft through joint venture company Scira Offshore Energy Limited. Statoil is the project manager during construction, while Scira will be responsible for the long-term operations and maintenance.
