Wiring Typical Laundry Circuit

It is commonplace for homes today to have one or more of three different laundry circuits. Each has its own unique assignment for supplying power to the laundry appliances. One is a 20-amp circuit designated to run the 120-volt power for the washing machine and the control power for the dryer. This circuit can also supply general-use devices. It is wired with 12-gauge wire and is usually type THHN or THWN wire. This is a dedicated circuit for the laundry room only.

The second is a 240-volt outlet that supplies a 30-amp circuit to feed an electric dryer. This circuit is wired with 10-gauge wire and is also THHN or THWN type wire. This feed is exclusively for and electric dryer and nothing else.

The third is one you may not have thought of. What would a laundry room be without a circuit for lighting? The lighting circuit may not be an independant circuit, and in fact, usually isn’t. It is likely it will be on the same circuit as an adjacent room or hallway.

You can test a dryer outlet by using a multimeter. Insert the two test leads into the tester if they aren’t already installed. Turn the tester power on and set the selector to AC volts. Now adjust the setting to the 240-volt setting or the next highest setting. Insert the test leads into the two top “hot” slots in the receptacle. These are the two slots that are tipped at a 45 degree angle. The voltage at this point should read between 220-240 volts. Now read the voltage between each of the two hot leads to the neutral slot. It is the straight slot below the two “hot” slots. The voltage here should read between 110-120 volts. If all of these connections check out, you have a fully functioning dryer outlet.

Wire a 4-Prong Dryer Outlets

4-prong dryer outlets are simple enough to wire if you have the proper material and tools to do the job. You’ll need at least a few of the following things to accomplish this task:

  1. Drywall Screws
  2. Screwdrivers
  3. Pliers
  4. Wire Strippers
  5. Razor Knife
  6. Linesman Pliers
  7. 240-volt, 4-Prong Dryer Outlet
  8. 10-3 With Ground Nonmetallic Sheathed Cable
  9. 2-Pole, 30-Amp Circuit Breaker

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Less Than 15 Minutes

Here’s How:

  1. Run a New Feed

    If your home is not already wired for a 4-prong outlet or if the feed is not equipped with two hot wire, a neutral, and a ground wire, you’ll need to run a new wire to feed the outlet. Install a 10-3 NM wire that has a ground wire included from the breaker panel to behind the dryer. Leave enough slack at each end to allow for proper connection.

  2. Mount The Dryer Outlet

    Remove the dryer outlet cover and remove the outlet electrical connection knockout. Install the nonmetallic sheathed cable into the outlet box, tighten the cable clamp, and attach the outlet to the wall.

  3. Wire The Dryer Outlet

    Strip the red and black wires and install the in the outer two connection points of the outlets, which is the two hot feeds of the outlet.

    Now strip and connect the white wire to the neutral connection, which is the terminal screw with the “L”-shaped terminal.

    Connect the bare copper ground wire to the ground terminal, which is the round terminal.

    Replace the dryer outlet cover plate and tighten the mounting setscrew.

  4. Connect The Wire To the Breaker

    Connect the red and black wires to the 2-pole, 30-amp breaker, the white wire to the neutral buss and the bare copper ground wire to the grounding buss.

    Turn on the breaker and test the outlet with a voltage tester or a digital multimeter.
