EXFO Adds WDM-Aware Testing Capabilities to FTB-5240S/B-P Optical Spectrum Analyzers

By cableunion, January 17, 2012 6:16 am

The FTB-5240S/B-P Optical Spectrum Analyzers from EXFO (News – Alert) now have WDM-Aware testing capabilities, the company has announced.

Weakening the channels and increasing filtered noise, higher network speeds such as 40G also mean longer distances and wider channels. EXFO’s latest FTB-5240S/B-P software addition helps to clearly differentiate noise from signals and analyzes only what deserves to be analyzed.

Making the FTB-5240S/B-P a powerful analysis tool that delivers extremely reliable results, with the on-graph peak detection threshold line, there are no longer any false peak analyses or overlooked low-power peaks, the company stated in a press release.

“The addition of these new optical spectrum analyzer test capabilities to our FTB-5240S/B-P demonstrates EXFO’s commitment to meeting the test needs of network operators,” said Etienne Gagnon (News – Alert), EXFO’s vice president of the Wireline Division and Corporate Marketing. “We are pleased to provide our customers with these industry-leading spectral analysis tools that deliver reliable test results, powerful troubleshooting and analysis, as well as remote operation and control.”

Offering accurate test results all automatically, all the time, FTB-5240S/B-P OSA’s WDM-Aware (News – Alert) offers the i-in-band mode – intelligent setups, optimized on a per-channel basis. WDM-Aware removes the uncertainty about test results, removes the guesswork, automates and speeds up tests, and thereby reduces OPEX.

WDM-Aware is the most accurate and adaptive in-band method on the market. Finally, to meet the demands of network equipment manufacturers who require 24/7 testing, lab simulations and remote control, the FTB-5240S/B-P Optical Spectrum (News – Alert) Analyzer also enables remote access to test tools.

In March 2011, the company announced the addition of 100G/40G Ethernet mapping over optical transport network (EoOTN) testing capabilities on its FTB/IQS-85100G Packet Blazer 100G/40G Ethernet Test Modules.

With the new capabilities, 100G/40G Ethernet system manufacturers and network service providers can overcome their test challenges and accelerate time-to-market. These capabilities include mapping 100G Ethernet services into OTU4 (111.81 Gbit/s) and transcoded 40G Ethernet services into OTU3 (43.018 Gbit/s).

Smartphones to Lead in LTE Subscriptions by 2014, Overtaking PCs

By cableunion, January 16, 2012 4:03 pm

Independent research organization, Pyramid Research has released its latest report entitled, “LTE (News – Alert) Devices and Applications: Next-generation mobile networks driven by video service,” which predicts that smartphones may be the largest segment by 2014, overtaking PCs.

This consequence may be because many operators worldwide are launching LTE networks and making way for users to use the LTE devices at a rate that has resulted in a tenfold increase since the end of 2010.

The Thematic Report by Jan ten Sythoff, offers an overview and background of the LTE market, operator approaches and the LTE value chain.

The key findings from the report are about LTE devices, including PC add-ons, hotspots, smartphones and tablets. It also looks at a number of mobile operator case studies around the world.

“The majority of products are currently aimed at PCs, with three out of five devices models being discrete modems, either routers or PC add-on devices,” he says. However, Verizon’s (News – Alert) Innovation Lab has been an important driver of machine (module) devices for LTE, providing technical resources to smaller companies looking to integrate LTE capabilities into a variety of different devices. The number of LTE modules has increased from none at the end of 2010 to 30 in October 2011,” says Jan ten Sythoff.

According to him, LTE smartphones are on the Android (News – Alert) platform with larger screens, front-facing cameras, and have broad video connectivity capabilities and by 2016, 57.3 percent of LTE subscriptions are expected to be smartphones, 33.4 percent PCs, 7.6 percent tablets and the remainder machine-to-machine devices.

Pyramid Research recently published another new report that speaks about fiber optic subscriptions that are expected to rise dramatically during the next few years. Pyramid Research, a provider of practical solutions to the complex demands its clients face in the global communications industry, states that Asia-Pacific’s total fiber subscriptions are expected to nearly triple from 73.5m in 2011 to reach 204.9m by 2016.

Tektronix Intros Comprehensive Protocol Test Platform

By cableunion, January 13, 2012 5:48 pm

Tektronix (News – Alert), a provider of test, measurement and monitoring solutions, announced that its newly released comprehensive protocol test platform can be used by engineers to analyze, stimulate, stress and characterize high-speed serial links – with support for speeds up to 10Gb/s.

According to Tektronix, the new TPI4000 Protocol Analyzer Series provides multiple test functionality within a single piece of hardware making it the most versatile serial tester on the market. A single TPI4000 protocol analyzer can handle functions like: protocol analysis; multiple protocols; traffic generation; impairment testing; bit error rate testing; API interface; custom protocol editor; and more. It can also be used to look at a variety of protocols such as Ethernet, Fiber Channel, Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI), and Serial Front Panel Data Port (FPDP).

The company claimed that the TPI4000 is the only protocol analyzer on the market built with a user-editable database that allows customers to define custom protocols using the optional Protocol Editor tool.

Some of the notable features and benefits of TPI4000 include multiple protocols and test functions in a single instrument, user-customizable and configurable protocol databases and the ability to see complete system operation. It also eliminates the need for separate instruments and displays all the traffic on a users’ own link as well as time-correlated views and triggers across every port & protocol.

Officials with Tektronix noted that the TPI4000 is the ideal protocol analysis tool for the realities of today’s world where every instrument needs to be broadly capable and flexible. A single instrument that can be configured to support a variety of functions and protocols saves their customers time and money because they don’t need to buy separate boxes for each test function or protocol or learn to use separate instruments.
