ADVA Optical Networking, Openreach Launch Optical Spectrum Access Service for UK Enterprise Networks

By cableunion, February 2, 2012 12:12 pm

To meet increasingly demanding business needs of U.K.’s enterprise community, ADVA Optical Networking and Openreach, the infrastructure division of BT Group (News – Alert), have jointly launched a new optical spectrum access (OSA) service. Part of Openreach’s optical spectrum service (OSS) portfolio, OSA provides new levels of network connectivity.

Built on ADVA (News – Alert) Optical’s scalable wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system FSP 3000, enterprises will now be able to transport enormous amounts of data throughout the U.K. with much improved latency and unparalleled encryption and security, said the partners.

In a statement, Jon Hurry, managing director, Strategy, Commercial, Portfolio & Policy, Openreach said, “The response to the FSP 3000 introduction has been exceptional.”

He added, “Since the pre-launch of this service we’ve collaborated with a range of communications providers, whose customers are expecting dramatically more from their networks. Scalability and protecting their investment is at the heart of our customers’ strategy; they need to transport increasing amounts of data across greater distances more securely and faster than ever before. OSA meets those criteria. Today’s launch marks a milestone for U.K. businesses seeking to position their networks as a competitive advantage.”

According to the collaborators, the OSA service provides dedicated single or resilient point-to-point optical fiber links throughout the U.K. With a route distance of up to 103 km, the service accommodates a range of interfaces and uses the same low-latency technology deployed extensively in many of the world’s leading financial trading networks.

Configured to specific networking demands and accommodating a full range of protocols and service interfaces, OSA has been built with the sole purpose of moving large amounts of data faster, farther and more securely, stated ADVA Optical Networking (News – Alert).

Alistair Swales, senior vice president, U.K. sales, ADVA Optical Networking, commented, “This is an incredible time to be involved in U.K. networks,”

“In less than one month we’ve seen over 200 design requests from customers interested in the new OSA service. This is simply unparalleled. Our R&D teams are working closely with Openreach to ensure this new service fulfills its promise and takes U.K. enterprise networking to previously unattainable heights. For today’s businesses and their mission-critical data, OSA is an imperative,” noted Swales.

Major Speed Advantage Claimed by NeXXCom Wireless

By cableunion, February 1, 2012 5:30 pm

Fiber networks on the most important financial trading path between the financial centers of Chicago and New Jersey just got faster. In the pursuit of achieving zero latency, NeXXCom Wireless has effectively cut more than 3 milliseconds by leveraging the use of low latency microwave radio technology.

In a release, Sal S. Benti, chairman and founder of NeXXCom Wireless said, “Today we are below 10mS round trip which is a significant improvement for High Frequency Trading, with further product improvements we expect to approach within 1mS of the speed of light.”

Many high frequency trading or HFT firms have deployed wireless solutions from NeXXCom Wireless. The organization is also in the process of designing similar networks for HFTs in the US and Europe. Low latency microwave networks can be beneficial to the HFTs as every mS saved during the transmission can result into savings worth $100 million.

Hunter Newby, CEO of Allied Fiber (News – Alert) and Founder of the Dark Fiber Community said, “As NeXXCom Wireless has recently joined the Dark Fiber Community, the industry is now aware of its wireless technology advancements for ultra low latency networks. Fiber and microwave complement each other in many areas including HFT and mobile backhaul for LTE (News – Alert) and other technologies.”

He continued, “For HFT, fiber offers the highest levels of aggregate bit capacity whereas for ultra low latency microwave offers speed advantages with sufficient bandwidth to be most effective for certain HFT applications. I suspect that as trading firms learn more about NeXXCom Wireless’ technology they will begin proliferating these ultra low latency networks around the globe in the not distant future to gain competitive advantage.”
