Customers will be offered a scalable network immediately when the latest data center is complete using this solution, thereby taking over operational ownership as and when required. In addition to the fast growing bandwidth requirements of Peak 10, an instantaneous network was also needed along with long term ownership economics for extending at a self-determined rate.

Case Western Reserve University Taps Calix for Gig.U Project

Calix?(News – Alert), a provider of telecom multiservice access solutions, announced the deployment of its Calix E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) at the Case Western Reserve University to support Gig.U University Community Next Generation Innovation Project.

Case Western Reserve is one of the 37 universities involved in the Gig.U initiative. The university will deploy fiber in and around its Cleveland, Ohio, campus. It will use Calix E7-2 and 716GE-I indoor optical network terminals (ONTs) to enable a network capable of delivering up to one gigabit per second (Gbps) to subscribers.

Through this gigabit network project, the university is looking to learn more about what advanced applications will emerge as students, residents, businesses, and anchor institutions experience the full benefits of the broadband speeds now available to them.

For this deployment, Calix partnered with Gigabit Squared. The participating companies will analyze the knowledge and lessons learned about this deployment. ?Gigabit Squared announced the Gigabit Neighborhood Gateway?(News – Alert) Program on May 23rd in support of the Gig.U initiative.

The first area targeted for deployment of this gigabit network will be the retirement community of Judson at University Circle, an accredited, not-for-profit organization that provides housing and care programs for residents.

General Cable Corporation to acquire alcan cable, the wire and cable business of Rio Tinto plc

General Cable Corporation (NYSE: BGC) (the Company) announced today that it has agreed to acquire Alcan Cable, the wire and cable business of Rio Tinto plc (Rio Tinto) (LSE: RIO). The purchase price is $185 million in cash, subject to customary adjustments primarily related to working capital levels at closing as provided in the definitive purchase agreement. The Company expects to use its Asset Based Revolving Credit Facility to principally fund the transaction. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2012, subject to receipt of regulatory approval.

Alcan Cable employs approximately 1,050 associates in its aluminum cable manufacturing and distribution facilities servicing the energy and construction markets in the United States , Canada , Mexico , and China. In 2011, Alcan Cable reported operating margins in the low single digit range. On an annual basis, the Company estimates the acquisition will contribute approximately $650-700 million in revenues at current metal prices. Tonga Cable Limited’s new undersea cable connection with Fiji will strengthen communications and bring advanced broadband services to Tonga’s residents and visitors

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has been selected by Tonga Cable Limited to deliver an undersea cable link between the Kingdom of Tonga and its neighbor Fiji, bringing to the Tongan islands broadband services such as streaming video and high-speed Internet access to residents and tourists alike.

The 837-km link with Fiji will provide Tonga with access to the Southern Cross Cable, the main trans-Pacific link between Australia and the United States. It will significantly boost connectivity and substantially increase the availability of broadband services for Tonga’s 100,000 residents and help spur economic growth.

Five Additional Communications Service Providers Select Calix Unified Access Portfolio

Calix (News – Alert), a global leader in access innovation, has announced that it has been chosen for five additional fiber access broadband stimulus projects.

Officials with Calix said that these five communications service providers have selected the Calix Unified Access portfolio to support approximately $35 million of fiber access Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP) Stimulus projects across the United States.

Clear Lake Independent Telephone Company (CL Tel) of northern Iowa is one of these innovative service providers, which is working towards expanding the reach of advanced broadband services over fiber.

CL Tel is planning to deploy the Calix E7-20 Multi-Terabit Ethernet Services Platform (ESAP) to bring ultra high-speed data, voice, and IPTV (News – Alert) services to previously un-served subscribers in the Clear Lake and Ventura area, as well as improve the service of existing subscribers.

“As the local service provider, our business is an essential part of the local economy of our rural community here in northern Iowa,” said Tom Lovell, general manager at CL Tel, in a statement.
