Ducab targets nuclear power plants cables contract

Dubai Ducab has applied to become the preferred cables supplier for the UAE’s nuclear power plants and is hopeful of approval by the end of the year, company chairman Ahmad Al Shaikh said yesterday.

The company is working with the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) on gaining approval from consortium Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco), for the construction of the plant in Braqa, Abu Dhabi, according to managing director Andrew Shaw.

Draka (Prysmian Group) to supply hi-tech elevator cables for the rebuilding of New York City’s World Trade Center

Milan, 23 February 2012 – Draka Elevator, a brand of the Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cables and systems industry, has been selected to provide custom designed elevator cables and accessories by two major global OEM elevator companies that are performing the rebuilding of the prestigious World Trade Center complex in New York City. Buildings 1 and 4 are now underway.

The contracts entail supplying assorted hoistway cables, standard wireway conduit and accessories, special custom designed wireway conduit and special wire junction/terminal boxes for more than 100 elevators due to be installed.

One World Trade Center will reach a height of 1776 feet. Draka Elevator’s cables will be used to provide power for elevator buttons, communications devices, emergency safety and more.  Some of the hoistway cables include fibre optic sub-units, which are used for high-speed communications throughout the World Trade Center complex. The cables and wireway products are being manufactured at Draka Elevator’s Rocky Mount plant in North Carolina.

Draka is also providing its Extended Factory Model (EFM) programme as a value-added service, storing a variety of components and materials in a Distribution Centre that delivers just-in-time all the materials to the customer, for incorporation into their own equipment and shipment to the jobsite.

Enhanced system combines best of both worlds to address access network requirements

Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cables and systems industry, will showcase its upgraded xsNet – access network – portfolio at next week’s FTTH Council Europe Conference which takes place in Munich on 15th & 16th of February.

Prysmian Group – formed by the combination of Prysmian and Draka – has maintained the former Draka xsNet brand and has rebranded and improved the system by including a selection of best of the best products from both of the former companies.

xsNet addresses the passive access network and provides tailor made solutions for all parts of the network – Indoor/customer premises, outside plant and POP/exchange applications. Belden Unveils New Brilliance Audio Snake Cable Lines

Belden announced the launch of its outdoor and direct burial analog audio, plenum jacketed and plenum Banana Peel snake cable lines.

It was revealed in a release that the new Brilliance Audio Snake Cables feature a robust construction which also has superior flexibility making it highly suitable for indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.

Belden, specializing in signal transmission solutions for mission-critical applications, provides the Brilliance Audio Snake Cables for in-the-field and permanent installation to connect multiple channels in low-level (microphone) and high-level componentry.

The applications where they can be used include console board equipment for recording, post production and sound system installations, said officials.

Most useful where ruggedness is imperative, the product line includes three cable series, namely waterblocked, plenum, and Banana Peel constructions. Featuring various benefits the cable series sports a foil shield that is bonded to the jacket. This construction enables them to maintain high performance with the ease of termination.

The waterblocked product series, used in direct burial and suitable for outdoor installations, features six standard product codes with constructions ranging from 1 to 12 pairs. This makes the product more advantageous when compared to gel installations.

Belden officials added that the plenum product series offers nine product codes including the recent additions of 4, 6, 8 and 12-pair constructions with an overall jacket. No heat shrink is needed as the pairs are individually jacketed facilitating field termination.

The patented Banana Peel construction offers 2, 4, and 6-pair audio snake cables forming easy-to-install composite cables. The component cables are bundled and affixed to a center spline, so overall jacket is not required. Easy to install, the Banana Peel design needs less effort and time compared to traditional jacketed products.

Belden announced the roll out of the GarrettCom brand’s enhanced IEC (News – Alert) 61850-compatible, substation-hardened managed switches targeted for data-intensive power utility applications such as Smart Grid. The Magnum 10KG Managed Switches offer up to eight Gb ports to support data-intensive Smart Grid applications. Magnum is a trademarked product line of Belden’s GarrettCom (News – Alert) brand.

Cable design

Technical characteristics

For the nominal voltages 6/10 kV, 8.7/15 kV, 12/20 kV and 18/30 kV the maximum conductor temperature is 90ºC, and the maximum short-circuit temperature is 250 ºC (for a maximum duration of five seconds). This cable allows for a bending radius of fifteen times the outer diameter. Due to its excellent mechanical properties, the RHZ1 aluminium cable, fabricated by Top Cable, is ideal for interior, exterior or underground installations.

Fireproof polyolefin sheath

The outer sheath of the X-VOLT RHZ1 (AS) AL cable is made of fireproof polyolefin, halogen-free and black with two green stripes.

Certifications and type-approval

The X-VOLT RHZ1 (AS) AL cable is approved by Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification (AENOR) and certified by the electric companies Endesa and Unión Fenosa.

Bahra Cables Company has started production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compound at its new state-of-the-art factory in Jeddah, which has an annual output capacity of over 36,000 tons per year — worth more SR120 million.

Bahra Cables Company, a subsidiary of Construction Products Holding Company (CPC), sources PVC feedstock for the new factory from Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC) to produce the granules used for jacketing and insulating cables.

Paris, December 6, 2011 – Nexans, a worldwide leading expert in the cable industry, has been awarded a major contract to supply power, control and instrumentation cables from its specialized POWERMINE® range for CHINALCO’s new Mount Toromocho open-cast copper mine in Peru. In cooperation with Anixter USA, its distribution partner for this project, Nexans is providing more than 1,200 km of cables to the Aker/Jacobs Engineering turnkey EPC (Engineering Procurement and Construction) contractor for the mine, which is scheduled to begin production in 2012.

Nexans has developed its comprehensive POWERMINE® range of customized cable solutions to ensure optimum safety, reliability and efficiency for mining operations. At Toromucho, Nexans cables will power surface mine equipment such as conveyor belts, lighting, power for various buildings, crusher machines, a maintenance concentrator, and other surface operations.

For this contract, the Nexans facility in Canada is supplying 1,000 km of power, control and instrumentation cables of the type THNN, XHHW, Ultra-VN, Ultrex-XL and Firex. These cables comply with USA Type National Electric Code (NEC) specifications. Nexans Chile is supplying 200 km of 5 kV and 15 kV medium-voltage (MV) flexible rubber jacketed power cables.

“This contract has been a great success and enables Nexans to secure a stronger foothold in the very active South American mining market. The key to our success in the face of stiff competition was the excellent cooperation with Anixter, so that together we demonstrated our ability to provide the EPC with a complete, high quality, cost-effective solution that met all their needs for both the fixed and mobile cable requirements,” said Gilbert Guerrero, Regional Sales Manager, Cross-Sales, Nexans North America. “A further advantage was the capability delivered by the Nexans teams based in Chile, since this project called for special packaging methods in order to ensure the secure and safe delivery of cables to a very remote site in good condition and ready to be installed and energized.”

Delivery of Nexans cables to the Toromocho mine project began in August 2011 and will be completed by the end of the year.

This mine is being developed by the Aluminium Corporation of China (CHINALCO) in a remote location, 130 km from Lima, the capital of Peru, at an elevation of 4,600 metres. The mine is estimated to have recoverable reserves of 5.7 million tonnes of copper, 148,000 tonnes of molybdenum and 188 million ounces of silver, giving a life of over 25 years at an average production rate of 210,000 tonnes copper annually.
