ADVA Optical Networking, Openreach Launch Optical Spectrum Access Service for UK Enterprise Networks

Germany’s Finanz Informatik Deploys Encrypted Optical Networking for Data Security

Today, security of information is critical to businesses of all sizes. Considering the rate at which hackers are stealing data from websites and online data resources, companies are taking extra steps to protect confidential information. According to ADVA Optical, FI-TS’s new data centers offer business continuity, disaster recovery, as well as storage area networking (SAN) and MPLS-services to customers in the finance sector because they deploy redundant fiber links with AES256 encryption. To improve network efficiency and control, while reducing power consumption and space, FI-TS uses a large portion of the available module interfaces, including 2, 4, and 8 Gbps Fibre Channel, and 1 and 10 Gbps Ethernet or various combinations.

In another statement, Hartmut Müller-Leitloff, VP Central Europe, ADVA Optical Networking said, “The FSP 3000 provides integrated encryption technology based on internationally-accepted standards for an excellent price-performance ratio.” “We have worked on successful data center interconnection projects with FI-TS since 2000 and are proud to take this step together into the next generation of secure and efficient data transmission.”

As per ADVA Optical’s explanation, the FSP 3000 is a scalable wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system specifically designed for large enterprises and service providers that require a flexible, cost-effective system that will multiplex, transport and protect high-speed data, storage, voice and video applications over fiber optic networks.

TE SubCom Demonstrates 100 Gbps Coherent Transmission over Trans-Atlantic Cable

TE SubCom, a pioneer in undersea communications technology, claimed that it has successfully demonstrated 100 Gbits per second (Gbps) coherent transmission over trans-Atlantic distances at ultra-high 10 Tbits per second total capacity on a single fiber. Per TE SubCom’s announcement, the test was completed using a prototype of the company’s new, first generation smarTEr C100 transceiver.

TE SubCom CEO David Coughlan said, in a company statement, “This significant customer demonstration builds on a 60-year track record of commitment to specialized, long-haul undersea transmission research and development and success in delivering capacity-record-setting undersea cable systems,” He added, “Further, it is a notable step toward the delivery of the first generation of new, 100 Gbps subsea cable systems and marks the beginning of ultra-high, double-digit terabit per fiber pair deployments.”

This demonstration, as reported by the Submarine Telecoms Forum magazine, transmitted 100×100 Gbps (10 Tbps) error-free capacity over 6,400 km with significant system performance margin. The test was conducted on a straight line coherent optimized test bed that simulates undersea systems. Also, the hardware tested, which included amplifiers and the fiber, incorporated proprietary soft decision error correction algorithms, wrote Submarine Telecoms Forum.

Submarine Telecoms Forum quoted Ekaterina Golovchenko, TE SubCom’s managing director of product management, as saying, “With hero experiments published last year and now with prototype hardware, TE SubCom has significantly built up its 100 Gbps technology and capabilities. “The door to the 100G era is now open,” added Golovchenko.

CEO Coughlan added, “What we have seen as technology has evolved is that it is absolutely crucial for customers to make the right selection of original cable system supplier at the outset, as their decision has long-term implications for maximizing the return on a significant capital investment.”  “However, we do expect the current activity in the upgrade of existing DWDM dispersion managed systems will reach a technical and economic limitation, probably in the next two years.”

“For that reason, continued Coughlan, “TE SubCom has long embraced the movement toward 100G, and we are leading the industry in delivering a new wave of technology and systems. A number of our customers are now looking beyond the current upgrade wave and considering plans for new, future-proofed and specifically designed 100 Gbps cable systems, to drive future competitive advantage to their business.”

ADTRAN Adds Total Access 1600 Series to Extend FTTH Portfolio

Networking and communications equipment provider ADTRAN (News – Alert), Inc. has expanded its portfolio of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband access productline with the addition of Total Access 1600 series. According to ADTRAN, the new Total Access 1600 is a family of 1RU form-factor optical line terminals (OLTs) supporting either Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) or Ethernet FTTH (Active Ethernet).

ADTRAN said that the new OLTs provide a compact addition to it’s FTTH productline, offering an efficient solution for deployments with lower subscriber densities where lower port-counts are required. While the new solutions occupy less space, they are not limited when it comes to functionality, offering 40 Gbps per system network uplink capability, Ethernet ring support, multi-system link aggregation, and stacking options, said the manufacturer.

In a statement, said David Emberley, research manager for IDCs Telecommunications Equipment practice, “The market for bandwidth intensive applications has pushed deeper into the Tier 2 and 3 markets with more and more IOCs and smaller telecom operators looking at equipment that helps them compete effectively in this demanding market.” He added, “The ADTRAN Total Access 1600 should be a welcome addition to these operators given its value proposition, compact size and service density.”

The Total Access 1600 family enables deployments to fit any network need by providing multiple cost optimized access-side interface options: 4, 8, and 16-port GPON and 48-port Gigabit Ethernet. Full backward compatibility with the entire Total Access line of Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) ensures a smooth transition for service providers interested in expanding FTTH service coverage further into their existing network or incrementally offering the service into new areas.

Government of India’s R&D Center Shares Indigenous Fiber-Optic Broadband Technology with Private Sector

In spite of red tape and layers of regulations in India, the Internet and mobile communication services have steadily improved in the country for last several years, driven primarily by the mobile private sector. Motivated by this growth, even the state government backed telecom companies like BSNL (News – Alert) and MTNL have been improving their services to keep up with the private sector.

To serve the broadband needs of the consumer, according to ZDNet, engineers at government of India’s technology R&D division, the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), have been improving data transfer technologies. As per this report, C-DOT engineers have developed fiber-optic based broadband technology called Gigabit per second Passive Optical network or GPON, which allows convergence of information. As a result, television, voice and data signals can be transmitted over the same cable over longer distances.

According the C-DOT, wrote ZDNET reporter Manan Kakkar, “GPON will reduce repeaters, thereby reducing failure and maintenance points. Deploying GPON based systems will offer connections up to 60 km from a central location.”

As per the report, GPON is implemented in two parts. It includes an optical line termination (OLT), which is the central location, and an optical network termination (ONT) at the end-user’s premise. online casino . casino .

The interesting part of this indigenous development is that the government is now sharing the development of GPON technology with the private sector, wrote Kakkar.

“As part of the new National Telecom Policy (NTP 2011), India’s Communications and IT minister Kapil Sibal and Minister of State for Communications and IT Sachin Pilot, transferred this technology to seven private companies, in a ceremony,” wrote Kakkar.

India’s seven private telecom service providers, Bharti Electronics, VMC Systems, SM Creative Electronics, ITI, United Telecoms, Sai InfoSystem, and Tejas Networks, are now permitted to make use of GPON technology to enhance their telecom networks, Kakkar wrote.  

The question now is how soon can the government deploy the new broadband technology and improve the country’s infrastructure, because infrastructure has been a limiting factor for high speed services in India.

TMCnet’s Dark Fiber Week in Review

Dark fiber is a growing field where there’s always something happening. Here are some of the news stories from the past week.

TMC’s (News – Alert) Madhubanti Rudra reported that Louisville, Colorado-based national provider of fiber-based bandwidth infrastructure and network-neutral colocation and interconnection services Zayo Group (News – Alert) announced that it is expanding its fiber footprint in Nashville.

Zayo provides fiber-based bandwidth infrastructure and network-neutral colocation and interconnection services over regional, metro and fiber-to-the-tower networks. Zayo’s network assets include over 24,000 route miles, connecting 153 markets across 31 states plus Washington D.C.

Additionally, Zayo has 4,400 buildings on-net, 2,000 cell towers on-net, and over 170,000 square feet of colocation space. Zayo’s clientele includes wireline and wireless carriers, data centers, Internet content and services companies, high bandwidth enterprises as well as federal, state and local government agencies.

On completion of this expansion project, Zayo will be able to expand its reach into new markets. By doubling the route mileage for the greater Nashville area from 40 to 78 route miles, Zayo will be able to serve the markets of Franklin, Brentwood and Oak Hill with dark fiber, Gigabit Ethernet and wavelength services.

Ashok Bindra noted that according to market research firm Ovum (News – Alert), despite the availability of components and equipments, market demand for the 10 Gbit per second Ethernet Passive Optical Network standard, also known as 10G EPON, outside of China will remain low until 2013.

In a new report, the independent telecoms analyst states that while components companies have been under pressure by equipment vendors and service providers to develop 10G EPON components, the momentum has slowed down.

In a statement, Julie Kunstler, Ovum analyst and author of the report, commented, “The pressure worked and multiple vendors have commercial-ready 10G EPON components and testing has been carried out by service providers…However, while several provinces in China have begun deployments, 10G EPON equipment deployments will remain negligible until late 2012 in China, and 2013 for other global regions,” added Kunstler. “Demand for XG-PON will also remain low, although the readiness of XG-PON components and equipment is lagging that of 10G EPON,” continued Kunstler.

As per the Ovum report, demand for 10G EPON and XG-PON has slackened for several reasons. Firstly, China’s service providers are favoring the deployment of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) versus fiber-to-the building (FTTB) due to the operational costs of FTTB and competition around bandwidth.

And Rajani Baburajan wrote that Telx, an interconnection and colocation provider in North American markets, announced that Trading Continuity Services (TCS), a provider of data protection and disaster recovery/business continuity solutions, has joined Telx Financial Business Exchange (FBX).

The Telx FBX is designed to deliver secure, reliable colocation infrastructure in prime locations. The partnership enables TCS to offer Telx’s financial markets customers secure, low latency access to its redundant, fully managed Data Protection offerings.

Telx FBX enables ultra-low latency access to an ecosystem of market participants such as trading venues, market data providers, buy-side and sell-side firms and network service providers.

TCS is a colocation and InterConnection customer in Telx’s strategically-located data center in downtown Chicago.

“We give trading firms a competitive advantage by delivering an end-to-end, fully managed Data Protection and backup that ensures high availability for the best electronic trading experience possible,” said Jim McDonough, managing partner at TCS.

Consequently, Kunstler commented, “The costs of 10G PON optics and equipment will decline rapidly once purchase orders are signed and deployments begin. A bigger problem is the lack of applications for 10G PON.”

“The plan for upgrading 1G EPON FTTB MDU equipment to 10G EPON equipment was simple and straightforward, involving the same service provider and subscribers on an existing FTTx (fiber-to-the-x) network. While this application still exists, the volume of replacements will decline as some FTTB-based MDUs are moved to the FTTH, concludes the analyst.
